I went to an intervarsity bible study, and i noticed a lot of ignorance. There was a reference to predestination, and I jumped on it asap because i like hotly debated topics. The exact verse is John 6:65, And he said, “For this reason i have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.” At face value, predestination appears to be the answer. I began to unpack this by saying that the Father has granted everybody a way to come to him by giving Jesus to us. The co-leader of the bible study group shot me down and said, well, you may be right, but that is not what we get from the text. We could have hours and hours of conversation/debate on the subject. So, in the end, the “group consensus” was that predestination seemed to be the most plausible answer. In their defense, the type of bible study is that we are only using scripture up to where we are reading. (In this case John 6 and before). I was not prepared enough to use previous scripture to argue against predestination, and being the new person, i let it slide. But honestly, why wouldnt we discuss these topics. I feel like Christians have become ignorant of the hotly debated topics. I feel like we are suppose to just ignore these topics simply because they are hard. I say, because these topics are hard, we MUST understand them in order to understand God or there is no point to being a Christians. If you arent going to discuss these deep questions that almost every Christian has in a group, then where are people going to learn about this stuff?
Overall, i liked the iv bible study, but i was quite infuriated by the ignorance of the leader. Maybe i am just very critical. Actually, i am very critical.
